My wife and I, were watching Bakery Boss with Buddy Valastro, AKA, the Cake Boss. During the episode I looked over at my wife and said, “pride scares me…” I was serious, dead serious… On Bakery Boss we witnessed an owner of a bakery argue and debate with Buddy Valastro over her terrible baked goods. It was evident by the amount of business, or lack there of, that this baker’s products were not worth coming into the store to buy. Buddy even performed a demonstration with local customers using the baker’s products and store bought products. The store bought products won the battle but the baker insisted that the customers did not know what true quality treats tasted like. Here is Buddy Valastro, arguably one of the best bakers in the nation and customer after customer telling the baker that her treats are terrible and she wouldn’t admit defeat. That is pride ladies and gentlemen. I felt bad for her and quite frankly, I was embarrassed because she couldn’t see that she is the problem to their bakery. The baker eventually caved and saw her faults, after many attempts to humble her.
Here are two passages the wise book of Proverbs has to stay about pride…”When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom” (Proverbs 11:2). “Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who take advice” (proverbs 13:10). Sure enough, this baker’s pride was a disgrace and hard to stomach. And her pride was causing quarrels between her and the family. In fact, as soon as Buddy helped resolve the pride that was in the Baker, everything changed. The baker made things right with her son and she released control and pride so that the necessary changes could be done to keep the business afloat. It took Buddy to be the communicator of truth to uproot the problem which was pride, not cupcakes. If pride can almost destroy a family and a business (If it can even get any worse), what else could it do? Don’t be afraid of the truth, honesty or advice, be afraid of pride because that’s what will bring disgrace and destruction. What faults, attitudes or behaviors could you be completely ignoring in your life because of your pride? Pride will blind you from the obvious signs and deafen you to the cries of people around you. See what I mean? Pride is scary and if we are wise we will let “Buddy Valastro’s” in our lives to tell us the truth. Or, we could always listen to God’s Word and let God humble us before someone else does.
